It shouldn’t be the end goal but it can help improve conditions for people and highlight contradictions present in a capitalist system.
Any positive changes Sawant or any elected official can make will be undone or simply not enforced. You can’t vote away any of the problems capital is causing in the lives of workers. It doesn’t do anything except help you make yourself feel better. Which, that’s fine, but it has the same impact on material conditions as voting for who should be in the NBA all star game

Sawant actively works in organizing and bringing together groups across Seattle. She’s not just not getting things passed in Congress.
The federal gov has fully abdicated the duty of governing in the modern US. It’s also where capital is easier to defeat as it’s usually more local forces than national or global ones. Local wins have continually happened and can continue to as long as we keep building (read rebel cities by David Harvey). PART of that is going to be using electoral politics to blunt the sharp edges of the state.
