Well, first you nationalize all the industries critical to the maintenance of daily life so you can control prices. Then yeah, a massive investment into increasing material efficiency through public transit and building effective logistics networks that aren’t based on an assumption of unlimited oil.

if I were dictator of the US it wouldn’t be hard imo. take 2/3 of the military budget and 5 years, build all the mass transport infrastructure that would move the most people in the short term and reduce the need of using a car. Tax incentives for working from home jobs. massively reduce the work day to 5h then 3.5h.

These measures alone would cut personal transportation needs by like half and is not the tip of the iceberg of things you can do to reduce fossil fuel usage. There is a lot that could be done realy. The problem isn’t that there are no solutions but there is nobody with the power to enforce them.

I live in a European city with robust public transit but I’m pretty sure you couldn’t convince most families to give up their cars. It’s perfectly fine if you’re single or live with a partner with no kids
