I decided to watch a video from Beau of the Fifth Column about all this. His take is that, from Putin’s perspective, the war has nothing to do with denazification or NATO aggression, but instead is a nationalist project to “unite greater Russia” by controlling Belarus, Ukraine, and of course Russia. Now it wouldn’t surprise me if a guy like Putin doesn’t actually have a moral objection to fascism, but the rest of it does since it runs counter to all the left analysis I’ve seen about this conflict.

I dunno, it seems a little convenient in that it leaves the West off the hook for what they have done regarding NATO aggression and the proxy war in Ukraine.

This is unironically a neocon take lol. Absolutely ridiculous.

yeah, its ridiculous to think that Putin is just going to just shift footing from restrained pragmatic realpolitiker to Literally Hitler, but the amount of talking heads both professional and self-made that have 0 understanding of geopolitics beyond “country cnn says is bad, is bad” drown out any level headed and realistic views on russia.

like yeah Beau, sure okay, russia randomly decided to embark on an idealistically driven empire-building exercise. you’re totally not drinking the flavor-aid right now

This is the ahistorical take that they are feeding the libs. Pissed that I have to hear it from radlib friends who are pretty flummoxed when I remind them that Chomsky predicted this outcome.

I believe he has a bit somewhere in this thread, though this is a pretty good thread to deprogram these particular brainworms in general

Technically pan slavism is a strong current in modern Russian society. It’s part of why there was a constant beef between Russia and Turkey
