I have completely given up on trying to keep up with the technical side of this war. Literally impossible to gain any kind of proper insight contemporarily, its all full of garbage and propaganda.
Like for example, you probably have heard about “cope cages” now, extra piece of armor Russian have on top of their tank to counter Javelin strikes. However, the way westerners talks about (starting with the name) made it sounds like it’s a massive military blunder, as if it’s not a common practice dating back to WW. Or that the west didn’t put very similar cage armor on literally all of their vehicles to counter RPG back in Iraq and Afghanistan. Literally everything the Russian military is perceived as some kind of a blunder. Like if a Russian soldier ran out of breath then they’ll say it’s a sign that the Russians are running out of oxygen.
This isn’t supporting Russia by the way, this is about trying to gain an objective understanding of the situation, and that’s a very difficult thing to do right now because fascists can’t properly gauge the strength of the enemy. A month back westerners were in the “enemy is strong” phase and now they’re in the “enemy is weak” phase. Maybe once the war clearly shows itself not in Ukraine’s favor, they’ll start saying that Russia is strong and dangerous again. Or that they’re doing both at the same time, propping narrative that Russia is losing while at the same time doubling military budget and arms purchases.
I think we will only have clear picture of this war like 20 years from now.
On the subject of “cope cages,” a war thunder youtuber I watch made a decent video about them (link here). They’re not going to stop a javelin, but they should be at least somewhat effective against RPGs and other similar types of light AT weapons fired from rooftops, as well as against other threats like suicide drones and old soviet 82mm mortars.
