I still don’t think I’m over the Central Bank thing. Like, that’s the kind of move you make after several months of conflict when you have literally nothing else you can sanction because you’re opening the Pandora’s Box that will lead to your own destruction, and you have to hope that it destroys Russia before it destroys you.
The US spent essentially a century constructing a global hegemonic empire that forced almost every country at gunpoint to use its currency, and then they voluntarily decide to destroy it. Completely of their own initiative. Literally nothing whatsoever was forcing the UK to seize Venezuela’s gold, or for the US to seize Afghanistan’s money, or even do this to Russia. There was no real threat from any of those countries. Now you’ve got Saudi Arabia talking with China, and Germany timidly asking if it can have its gold reserves transferred from NYC back to Germany. The US hasn’t shot itself in the foot, it’s shot itself in a lung, and as it slowly suffocates and loses consciousness and bleeds out over the coming years and decades, everybody else will be crowding around wondering… “Uhhh… so now what do we do?”

It would be weird for an increasingly autarkic Russia to make the mistake of leaving their reserves in foreign countries when so much else had been considered, I agree. Perhaps it was bait, or perhaps they genuinely thought it was safe because obviously the US wouldn’t take it because that would fundamentally undermine their whole system! Surely they wouldn’t destroy their own empire just to take half of Russia’s reserves. So that must be safe.
And then, well, America decided that a group of neo-Nazis in one of the poorest countries in Europe was worth destroying themselves over. Awesome.
Omg iv been thinking about this since the whole Ukraine War started, our ability to project force is quite literally tied, to the the fact holding usd gives the united States money in a weird not straight forward way. Never felt this optimistic about the empire truly being on a track to disintegration, that beening said I look forward to the day that. Neoliberals become a fringe ideology. All that hopelessness some of us felt in the early 2000’s we are gonna fucking win, the start of unions coming back, not that we have won yet but honestly feeling better then I have in years.
I wonder if the think tank that advise that senile old man is really thinking about long term, not just only think about destroying Russia
