While I’m not entirely against pornography obviously, I do believe that the extreme nature of mainstream porn that is shoved in the faces of so many young men (and young boys) as soon they dive into the internet is extremely problematic. Nothing wrong with being kinky of course, but the fact that the first thing so many 9 year old boys see when they first google “boobs” is violent, degrading, and incest-themed porn troubles me deeply. The result is that, in their still developing prepubescent minds, they are being conditioned to be turned on by the degradation of and violence towards women. Ultimately, if they consume this kind of content consistently for the many years before they are sexually active, they will come to see violence, degradation, and incest as being synonymous with sex in their minds, and I really do believe that it will result in the direct increase in violence and sexual mistreatment towards women. Kinky sex is something that you should get into because you seek it out, because you are curious and have a genuine interest, not something children stumble upon by accident.

Additionally, I believe that the vast majority of porn on the internet is immoral in nature. If the porn isn’t hosted independently by the actors such that they are being paid directly by their viewers, there is no way to know that the actors are not being abused or financially exploited behind the screen. The model of “free” porn in general facilitates the theft of income from porn actors and actresses. Additionally, a significant portion of “amateur” videos hosted on sites are either revenge porn or just straight up SA. If you have no way of verifying that what you are viewing is not revenge porn or SA, then your porn viewing may very well be immoral, IMO. Of course, there will always be the small minority of folks who are just kinky and want to post their porn for free for general consumption, but this is vastly the atypical case. For reference, I am talking about hardcore videos posted on sites that do not verify their hosted content. The nature of softcore porn posted by individual users on reddit, for example, is somewhat different.

I don’t mean to be overly aggressive in this post, or to make anyone here feel like a terrible person over their porn habits. I just want to put this forward as its something I feel strongly about, and I hope that it may change the way you view your own porn consumption in a productive way. For reference, I am a woman who used to use porn but, since learning the truths of the industry, I cannot bring myself to watch mainstream “free” porn anymore.

Good post.

I’m lucky to have not seen porn until I was an adult and I hate to think how it’s become completely typical for child to start seeing porn from a very young age.

I 100% think it’s good that countries like China ban porn. Ofc it doesn’t actually work but I have to image it makes it much harder from children to stumble upon or find

I think that’s a great way of banning things online. If you actually want the thing and are willing to go out of your way and show some basic technical competency, you can have it. But if you’re a child or a grandma stumbling around with no idea what they’re doing you won’t end up reading some American Facebook page about how the covid vaccine is made from kidnapped children’s bones.

Yeah exactly.

It basically doesn’t effect adults at all but it actually does stop young kids from stumbling on it

I don’t agree with the banning of porn in principle, but I agree that the net effect of banning porn probably does a net good in the case of china. It is just so incredibly ripe for exploitation and so very dangerous for children. I swear if I ever have kids, if I take a hard stance on anything at all, it will be no unsupervised internet access until an appropriate age (12, 13? I dunno). And then a thorough discussion of what kind of stuff is out there on porn sites and how it can be very harmful for developing brains.

I think a lot of us were lucky to grow up during the more unformed internet before it turned into a Bad Vibes & Propaganda Firehose and were inoculated to the worst of it, but as it presently exists I would not let a child near it.

I think banning it is totally fine and probably necessary.

I don’t think it should be criminalized however. Adults will still get it just fine under a ban and banning might be the only way to reliably keep it away from children

Can’t read right now or give it a proper response (i’m drunk as hell), but i’m sure I probably disagree. I think most of people’s problems with pornography stems from it being in a capitalist system in general and not porn itself, railing against porn will do nothing.

In the post I basically explain that, in essence, I am not against pornography in theory but moreso in the way it is implemented under the capitalist model. For the most part, the model of “free” porn effectively operates on the theft of income from porn actors and actresses. There is also no good way to determine that proper consent is given in the case of most amateur porn.
