because in mainstream american culture there is no past, you are an essential creature set in stone at the moment of your birth (because jesus, supply side jesus most of all) so actions cannot have consequences(a fairly common christian doctrine, forget what it’s called. but its the same one that, with prosperity doctrine, lets them see trump as their messiah), and property is a part of identity-even analogue of the soul, the means through which you achieve salvation and eternal whatever.
