Found in the Deprogram subās discussion ofnit which is quite good. Radio War Nerd also does this beating around the bush with Zenzās beliefs. To say nothing of Deprogram & RWN Russia takes,
I like this thread, Iāve seen it before but I donāt really understand the disdain tbh, the thread is making fun of him for trying to find a nuanced position? thatās what we all do, you can say itās bad analysis but calling him a radlib seems weird. He has plenty of other things to criticize about him as far as his online behavior goes
Saying āactually both sidesā or āthe truth is somewhere in the middleā doesnāt automatically mean thereās nuance
Between āitās genocideā and ānothing morally objectionable is happeningā the truth is somewhere in the middle, I understand Chinaās policy in Xinjiang but I would prefer it were different
Itās a program that impacts millions of people, there is going to be variance no matter what, and there would be āvery concernedā people who just want ānuanceā no matter what, because that variance that exists in reality will always produce at least some poor outcomes to handwring about and say you āprefer it were differentā, since nothing goes wrong in the ideal version they imagine in their head.
The bottom line is that Chinaās program is worth supporting both for the people of Xinjiang who were being terrorized and for the stability of China as a whole, and the handwringing is functionally only thinly distinguished from concern trolling when one merely speaks in vagueries about āmorally objectionable things happeningā.
If you have specific objections, name them. Otherwise, just move on instead of engaging in that absurd song and dance against imaginary dogmatists.
How is it nuanced? He doesnāt even explore terrorism in the region. He skirts around the topic he wants to get engagement off as a third rail issue.
Saying states have never treated minorities right is very reductive. Iām doubtful thatās someone whoās ever taken a nuanced look at the history of, say the USSR.
Nuanced position between the Victims of Communism Foundation & strawman who supports everything the govt could hypothetically do seems like a cynical deliberate choice to me
Iām not saying it was a great take, Iām disagreeing with the framing of the beginning of the thread. I agree with the rest of the thread, not sure where that got mixed up. I think itās possible to try and be nuanced and miss really badly, I know Iāve had my fair share of bad takes
I think we should all be way more judgmental about how people try to make us spend an hour after work.
