We can assume how hexbear users feel about themselves. I’d be more interested in how local users feel.
I just find making literally everything political exhausting. A lot of them can be obnoxious about it. I can’t even say “ricing” in c/unixporn without them getting upset. Like bruh
It’s stereotypical but not racist by itself. Racism implies some sort of discrimination. It could be used in a racist way, but most of the times it isn’t. I am not saying that stereotypes should be propagated, either. Stereotypes are problematic in their own way and can lead to racist actions. I understand the movement to remove words like this from popular vocabulary, but I just think that it’s important to call things what they really are by definition.
Do you really think I use the term “ricing” in a way to discriminate against or other Asians? It’s not comparable to the n word because no one calls Asians “ricers”. Also, how would using a word that describes putting in great effort to make a system aesthetic and uniquely yours have a negative connotation?
Oh my god. Are you still salty about that discussion?
The term goes back decades as a pejorative for Asian dudes putting shitty mods on their cars. I heard it in the 1990’s a lot. A “Honda Ricer” was an Asian dude’s stock car with a spoiler. It was an “Uncle Ben Hot Rod” when they modded the engine.
It’s disparaging. It’s based on race. That makes it racist. Stop using racist language. It’s akin to saying you got “gypped”, or a sly salesman “Jewing me down” on a deal. Stop.
Just use something like souping up. It has negative connotations around people of Asian descent, what they eat and what kind of car they supposedly prefer to drive. We don’t see people going around saying I’m n-ing my computer. Being conscious of the actual meaning of words you’re using for things just helps keep the conversation on track and helps keep conversations on topic. Even if that word is ultimately used for something that the general consensus is, a good thing.
