Also Operas aren’t necessarily much more expensive than a cinema ticket. Some Opera houses have reasonable prices.

~20 min clicking through the wikipedia page on Opera seems to suggest you’re correct, most of them were middle class or poor

My wife graduated in the opera arts. Now teaching because the money is better and more reliable.
