I didn’t hear it first hand but from what everyone in that initial thread was saying it’s pretty crazy the Chapos were giving it praise. Avatar is a great example of how devoid of opposition US media had in the 00’s. The movie looked cool and all, and was definitely anti imperialist, but it was basically blue Pocahontas, but even worse because the John Smith character in Avatar became king of the natives instead of going the fuck home like John Smith did at the end of Pocahontas.
Just to put it in perspective, the most subversive film the chapos could think of was a rehash of a movie made in '95 and almost a decade after the US had invaded the middle east lmfao
That is true, but we’re essentially talking about two different things at this point. I think that’s a pretty valid way to view the movie, but I’m mainly talking about it in the historical context in the vacuum of 2009. Like what relationship it had to culture and the media of the time.
I do question how that plays into cultural appropriation though thats not really my thing.
