anyone know what’s going on with the panchen lama? Western media says that China abducted the panchen lama, basically the vice president of tibetan buddhism, and replaced him with their own panchen lama. Did this happen? I don’t blame them, the Dalai Lama sucks, but does anyone know any other details?
It’s true. No one has seen him for decades. Look, the Tibetan aristocracy sucked, and that’s what the exiles primarily consisted of. However while good land reforms came, they also came with religious oppression. Even 70 years after the invasion, there’s tensions. One of the egregious ones in recent memory was back in 2003, Tibetan Buddhists attempting to leave Tibet to join the Dalai Lama were shot by Chinese border guards, you can read about the incident here. The 2008 riots are another instance. Things are not good, the government actually denied the 2003 shooting occurred at first but some Romanian mountain climbers incredibly were nearby and recorded it.
