Since you said u liked lo-fi I’d say start with there. Nujabes and then maybe Dilla and The Roots, further back to ATCQ and then Nas’ Illmatic and from there you’ll probably be able to find what u want yourself. Tho I wanna say lo-fi is gentrified hiphop that has been really bastardized since the days of Dilla and Nujabes.
From Nujabes you can pretty much move on to his collaborators like Funky DL, Cyne, Apani, Substantial. If you don’t want to go too deep into Jazz Step, Dilla is a good starting point, the greats of the 90s (Tupac and Biggie Front and centre) as well as someone like Talib Kweli could be your thing.
Speaking of the 90s, I’ll just mention some of my favorites. Wu Tang - 36 Chambers, Big L - Lifestylez ov the Poor and Dangerous, and this Beat Junkies mix (apparently DMCA’d in the US, hopefully there’s a way around it)
And now that I’m thinking about it, DJ Screw might be kinda lo-do adjacent sorta. That “June 27th freestyle” is absolutely killer.
Turns out the only hip hop I know is from the 90s
Early Kanye is a good place to start. His work for 2004 to 2007 should be up your alley.
dont sweat it man no one actually cares if you’re a honkey square
listen to music you enjoy
my personal favs
Jurassic 5 Tribe Called Quest Wu Tang MF DOOM
just go listen to a hip hop playlist and spotify and pick out stuff you like
there’s no theory needed for getting into music
The East Coast, West Coast, and Dirty South have their own vibes. If you Google Nas, Snoop Dogg, and Big Boi you will get what I’m talking about. You will have heard all the jams already. Just explore from there. Hip Hop is deep asf
This is true. Hip hop music is often influenced by the geographical region that it was produced.
