I’ve heard the term “Homonationalism” used too when it comes to this but with LGBTQ rights.

Because they implicitly consider only upper class deserving of any rights. Lower class is just tools for upper class.

It’s important to note that hamas used to be funded by Israel, because they considered islamists to be a usefull counterweight to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) which was dominated by secular and marxist forces.

From wikipedia :

In 1973, Yassin founded the social-religious charity al-Mujama al-Islamiya (“Islamic center”) in Gaza as an offshoot to the Muslim Brotherhood.[116][117] The Israeli authorities encouraged Yassin’s charity to expand as they saw it as a useful counterbalance to the secular Palestine Liberation Organization.[90][118][119][120] Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor of Gaza at the time, recalled that they even funded his charity: “The Israeli government gave me a budget, and the military government gives to the mosques”.[121] Israel’s religious affairs official in Gaza, Avner Cohen, later regretfully concluded that Hamas was created by Israel. He claimed to have warned his superiors not to back the Islamists.[122]

This article from the Wall Street Journal is also a good background-reading about the funding of hamas by Israel.

Hamas distinguishes between Judaism and Zionism in its charter and supports a two-state solution with the 1967 borders, which is more moderate than any Israeli party.

Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine. Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity.

It also has a lot of extremely anti-semitic “Jews control the world and media and are behind every war” conspiracy theory language all throughout. At least if the versions I’ve seen are the real thing.

Yeah. And the most recent revision was definitely to counter specifically that talking point since it wasn’t playing well originally. But the leadership is still, as I understand it, essentially the same people who opened with “wipe out the Jews” until they realized that line wasn’t going over so well. Support for all the Palestinians–their plight is a humanitarian crisis. But Hamas is a warmongering, antisemetic, intolerant military group and they do not get an extra nugget.

warmongering […] military group

Is that a fair way to characterize anti-colonial resistance? Is it wrong to be a military group? Were the Sandinistas wrong to be a military group?

I’m sure neither of us would claim that Muslim people are incapable of social progress, so how can you be sure that this is all just a cynical rebranding?

I didn’t see any of that. It’s pretty short.

There are six mentions of “Jew” or “Jews”, all contained in these two paragraphs.

  1. Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with the Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine. Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity.
  1. Hamas rejects the persecution of any human being or the undermining of his or her rights on nationalist, religious or sectarian grounds. Hamas is of the view that the Jewish problem, anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews are phenomena fundamentally linked to European history and not to the history of the Arabs and the Muslims or to their heritage. The Zionist movement, which was able with the help of Western powers to occupy Palestine, is the most dangerous form of settlement occupation which has already disappeared from much of the world and must disappear from Palestine.

No mentions of “media”.

The only mention of war is “Palestinians [call] for the prosecution of Zionist war criminals”.

https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.

Today it is Palestine, tomorrow it will be one country or another. The Zionist plan is limitless. After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.
