Actually yes. On one hand Italian cuisine was viewed as ethnic and smelly for a long time (and aot of recipes even today have the spice toned down) on the other pizza was seen as poor Italians food and really looked down upon just like everything “smelly” and “pungent”

Did this have anything to do with wealthy Europeans not eating tomatoes? I remember reading that the upper classes of Europe refused to eat tomatoes for many years due to a false rumor that they were poisonous.

EDIT: Reposting the following because the comment was hidden…

I found more info on it:

A nickname for the fruit was the “poison apple” because it was thought that aristocrats got sick and died after eating them, but the truth of the matter was that wealthy Europeans used pewter plates, which were high in lead content. Because tomatoes are so high in acidity, when placed on this particular tableware, the fruit would leach lead from the plate, resulting in many deaths from lead poisoning. No one made this connection between plate and poison at the time; the tomato was picked as the culprit.

Don’t think so. Early pizza often didn’t have tomatoes, and very early on tomatoes were kind of a rich people thing cause of their rarity…

They refused to eat them b/c they all used pewter plates and the lead would leach out into the food if you are tomatoes out of them. Because this was back in the days when putting tobacco in your ass was a cure for hiccups or some shit, they concluded it was the food itself

Italians were still considered non-white back in 1980s.

I remember a job application where under “Caucasian” it had 4 categories: White, Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern
