Now what is the real “cancel culture”

Chappelle bragged about being “cancelled” because of some negative tweets he got and people saying they’re done with him. Its like motherfucker, you gained fans from this and said an opinion that over 100 million Americans agree with or at least DGAF.

I still think the only person to ever get “cancelled” is Colin Kaepernick. Dave will be fine and still adored as a comedian.

I remember a lot of communists getting canceled during the red scare and McCarthyism of the 1950s….

True. I guess I should’ve qualified my last statement with “during the era of ‘cancel culture’”. I feel like canceling became a term/thing people use in the last 5 years.

The Dixie Chicks were not much spoken of in the 2000s after Natalie Maines spoke out about Bush. They managed a comeback years later but were kinda out during some of their prime years.

Bill Maher was literally canceled but then ended up on HBO so that’s a wash.

The Dixie Chicks were at the height of their careers and one of the top acts in the world. Overnight, you’d be hard pressed to find a single radio station that would play them. Their comeback during the Trump years was basically riding the culture war for a comeback, but the original cancellation was legit a massive push from those in power to silence them

I had no idea who they were prior to the Bush thing. I’m also in Canada where we got to spend the Iraq war feeling really superior to Americans, so I think they actually got more airplay here afterwards.

Celebrities and MSM do plenty to hype up “cancel culture” despite the fact that most of the time these “cancelled” celebrities stay and sometimes become more relevant. I fucking hate having to constantly hear about celebrities who whine about cancel culture.

Nah, dozens of people have been cancelled and had their entire careers ruined for merely criticizing the zionist regime.

TBh, lots of people start disappearing from the mainstream when they start to get too radical, Kaepernick, Thunberg, Malala, the more radical teenagers from Parkland (some of them were abolitionists, bet you didn’t know).

Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line.

Cis people do not get to decide where that fucking line is.

I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.

“You’re all too sensitive to take a joke.”

Holy shit what a disaster of a PR statement. If I wasn’t stealing netflix already I would cancel.

Totally agree. There is a metric fucking ton of stand up that doesn’t punch down. That’s been a standard for years.

The 16:9 cut of Seinfield suggests otherwise.

Same shit as claiming that platforming hate speech is “fostering a conversation”. It’s disgusting.

In the name of “fostering a conversation,” we’re holding a tournament style debate club thunderdome in which minorities grovel before a slackjawed audience and are forced to justify their right to exist. We’ll be eliminating two contestants every week until we arrive at a winner.

I ‘have’ Netflix but have yet to lay a dime. Someone named Mike pays for it. I have no idea who they are but they don’t use their account and curved a laptop years ago without clearing their passwords.

I didn’t take Mike’s credit card info or read his emails. If he’s gonna keep paying for Netflix I’ll use that tho.

Sarandos also said that Chappelle’s last special, Sticks & Stones, is Netflix’s “most watched, stickiest, and most award winning stand-up special to date.

That is not an acceptable response.

To put it more simply: “Both Netflix and Dave are rolling in cash, so no, we’re not going to do anything about this.”

Pirating from streaming services is and always has been the ethical choice.

The streaming market has now reached the critical mass of it being easier than paying for all the services too. It’s cutting the cord all over again, just now it also owns the TERFs

There was a sweet middle-ground during which just subscribing to Netflix was easier than figuring out the hip new way to download a chunk of media.

But there are so many god damn services now. And lots of them still try to inject ads into the stream. Nobody is going to pony up $10/mo for every damned channel (and $50/mo if you want sports). It’s dumb. I’m just going to steal it now.
