I don’t know if this really makes sense. When people said he was bougie I thought they meant legit bougie. Not that the guy was 6 years old in a middle class black neighborhood in DC bouncing between his divorced parents.

This article, like many others, fails to address the multiple anti Asian racist/xenophobic remarks in “The Closer” as well. Really surprising (or perhaps very unsurprising) how that just went under the radar.

Dave has been making jokes about Asian people his whole career

It sucks that nobody ever talks about it because racism against asians is only now starting to get some pushback

Yeah - it’s always under the pseudo IDPOL protection of his wife being asian. If you’re gonna use the ‘my friend is black so I can say it’ defense - at least make the jokes funny. He’s done squinty eyes with his fingers in two specials now. He’s a hack.

a lot of white nationalists have asian gfs/wives, but they don’t get away with their racist BS. Chapelle is black so he can get away with it? It’s not just lib idpol, Leftists have been saying blacks can’t be racist since they collectively don’t hold much political power.

Maybe leftist ivory tower academics can break it down further, since Chappelle has never grown up poor and his mass popularity (across class and racial lines), wields more political influence than a lot of politicians. Idpol is fuck’n wild…

This is a great article.

One cringe take on this whole thing that I had seen was that no one ever complained about Chapelle when he was joking about black plight as a justification for him being transphobic.

I agree but Dave Chappelle also says constantly “I am not from the hood, people think I am” in his specials / have done bits about not being able to relate to black ppl who grew up poor.

When chappelle talks about the hood in his stand up he always describes being taken there and that’s always been a part of the comedy. He also is very clear about growing up with white people and has a lot of jokes about his experience growing up with white people. Not defending him or anything and I agree that his Tyrone biggums character is a manifestation of his wealth and punching down on poor black people.

I just think that it’s all kind of a part of the joke, he’s our avatar that can speak to whiteness because he’s in their spaces.

I read the accent as a southern black accent, especially considering where he’s from. I really don’t think it’s a hood accent, I think it’s just a distinctively black older person one. Which is a part of the comedy

But yeah the skits have more poor punching down
