Like I know he tried to play the upstanding reasonable conservative, but getting mad about this is literally just clear, unmasked racism. No other reason to get mad about it at this point.
I mean it’s insight into the reactionary mind if you’re new to criticizing this kind of stuff. This is what the free-market always has meant in conversations with these people about economics. It’s not a system of systems, it’s not a rational way of efficiently distributing resources, it’s not some ideological commitment to individual liberty. It’s about a bunch of pissed-off white dudes using the market as their own personal army to stamp out grievances so they can point to it as proof that everyone agrees. They don’t want a real free market because it wouldn’t be controlled by them. They just want a form of organization that has all this built in ideological underpinning that says markets are rational and always right, while also using it to carry out their personal goals. The market should support the world I want but it shouldn’t support a world where I’m completely fine but I might have to have a black James Bond.
It’s a pretty easy win for them because all the movie has to do is make $1 less than any of the other 30 James Bond movies and they get their win-state. Forget that the series died before Craig because nobody gave a shit about it until it adapted itself to a new cultural moment. Forget the Austin Powers years where making fun of Bond was more profitable than actually making Bond movies. Bond wasn’t a pillar of western civilization at that time. JP couldn’t have cared any less about it then. But now the cultural moment is here to whine about absolutely everything and it’s how he makes his money. Now Bond is important.
