My understanding is that there is strong division within the younger and older elements of the party on this subject and that the old-guard of the party have been happy to serve as a weak opposition to Putin.

Old guard has a lot of people who use to be buddies with Putin in the KGB who actively worked to fuck over Zyuganov during and after the 96 election.
