china pls be safe.
A lot of cope in this thread but it does look like things are going to get bad, or at least the CPC is preparing for things to get bad. They’re already building another 6,000 bed hospital in Jilin (which will take six days because China has god tier construction abilities) and locked down the entire province (around 25 million people), have locked down Shenzhen (a city of 12+ million people and the heart of manufacturing in China), and are diverting flights from Shanghai in preparation for a lockdown. They’re pulling out all the stops to starve this outbreak of oxygen, and I sincerely hope it works—once omicron gets going it’s basically impossible to stop.
There a rolling lock down (One area gets locked down per city district, mass tested twice, lift lockdown if all negative, repeat) in the city I live in. Goal is to mass test an entire city without straining medical resources. I imagine other cities are doing the same.
From the numbers I’ve seen, it’s a good thing the whole country reacted before mass spreading happened. Daily increase of cases is in the range of dozens to just over 100 in most cities. Jilin and Changchun might get out of control(Both are somewhat near DPRK, shield your nation with juche magic, Kim), but the rest seems stable so far. There’s also Hong Kong with more cases than the rest of China combined, but the SAR gov prefer the western approach of doing absolutely nothing.
It is rising, but it’s important to recognize that it’s only up to 0.5 daily cases per million (which is, of course, 0.05 daily cases per 100 000).
For comparison where I live we’ve basically stopped testing and yesterday we still had 5 cases per 100 000. The US is averaging 10 daily cases per 100 000.
Could it get worse? Yes, and I truly hope it doesn’t. I’m just urging a little perspective here.
They’ll try. But the virus is on Hard Mode, atm, and Chinese cities are dense af.
