Huh the main thing I had heard of about in chilean media about his time in the summit was about him criticizing the US for excluding Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the summit and on a vacuum that sounded pretty based, but thats probably the media trying to paint him a a scary leftist more than anything.
Also him talking about “the capacity to absorb by itself a migratory flow” feels weird, a year ago he had more of a pro inmigration vibe going on. Inmigration, specially from Venezuela, is becoming more of a main political issue here, I have heard more than one person say “Yeah the far right will definitely win the newxt election if this venezuelan inmigrants thing keeps going”
i think he was trying to “both sides” the issue with cuba and venezuela by calling them authoritarians and saying that the USA shouldnt exclude states from the summit, but AMLO is a socdem that barely does anything and he boycotted the summit.
and that accident with the migrants and truck driver made a bunch of xenophones from the right and they used to be very pro venezuelan migrants with piñera saying they should come to chile
Yeah is more of bothsides “I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend your right to say it”
Hmm the xenophobia thing is not exclusive for the right, the “apolitical” chilean is getting more anti inmigrant. Hell I have a communist friend who doesnt like venezuelans since they the ones who come here hate socialism.
fuck this liberal
Anyone got a link with the speech of actual quotes with context?
Not doubting he said it bc he’s outlined this position previously, just curious what he actually said because the article is pretty vague.
after this guy and Castillo, can we stop hyping up the next ‘left’ south American politicians as the next coming of Chavez? I think the period of progressive social politics is dead unless theres another big people’s movement
lol it’s precisely because of this guy and Castillo that I can’t get too excited about Gustavo Petro in Colombia
Most left-leaning Latin American presidents have been lib since the first pink wave. Chavez and Morales were the only standouts that I can think of. Most of the others quickly capitulated to the right or were moderate socdems at best.
Correa was pretty good even if he was a Socdem, he made a lot of progress helping the people of Ecuador
That is true. I think that a lot of people here (and in the left in general) have shifted towards South America for their fix of electoral politics since the one’s in America and in the west are too alienating for us. Everybody is stuck in :vote:
Meanwhile, here’s a bunch of Caribbean ministers vouching for Cuba and denouncing its exclusion from the Summit of the Americas:

Besides being from the Caribbean, I wonder what other characteristic do they have in common that would cause them to sympathize with Cuba?
Cuba has helped them in the past and many Caribbean people go to medical school in Cuba.
It seems like Cuba’s entire foreign policy most years is “We have doctors and we’re here to help”.
