Whenever characters start singing out of nowhere it just makes me
I would assume that they’re descended from Operas, with the main distinction being how seriously the production takes itself.
Honestly there are a lot of operas that take themselves much less seriously than musical theatre. There’s a huge difference between the wearing earnestness of Hamilton and, say, 1625’s La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina which has a chorus mostly comprising of men turned into plants constantly snarking about the action and has the Heroine literally ride in on a dolphin.
I think one one the things that makes musicals so annoying is how they take themselves so seriously while at the same time restricting themselves to cheesy, tedious pop music.
Opera has the musical gravitas to pull off big emotions and epic storytelling. And on the other end of the scale everyone likes a comedy performance with funny songs in it.
they are like movies, but bad
They have a little bit of everything! They’re the Golden Corral of entertainment.
do they just come up to you on the street and mug you? or how do you even encounter them?
i cant remember when i last saw even a glimpse of a musical. and for some reason the only one i can remember is where the aging playboy marries the old prostitute’s super young daughter, and it’s very icky.
gigi, that’s what it was.
