This is how it worked out materially, but I have a feeling that the truth is dumber and Musk bought into his own hype without forethought and assumed his cash could overcome engineering problems. I think he’s kinda like, “well if I couldn’t be the hero I’ll be the villain of this then” but in reality he’s just a bumbling idiot not the savior of humanity nor a master manipulator and heard someone else speculate that’s why he did what he did.
