Just like the Futurists, he made art for a society that would have it that none of his art existed and he was placed upon a pike (well if he was poor, the rich and well connected can do what they like, which is TRUE freedom or something, guy was an anarchist and a monarchist aka an an-cap before his time).

I think Dali came to fascism later in life, but earlier he was in a communist group. I always wondered if it was a truly natural progression or just a consequence of wanting to stay in Spain under Franco and letting justifications become ideology.

Edit: looking this up, he stopped being a hardcore communist with the slow rise of fascism and after Franco consolidated power became a frothing at the mouth pro-catholic fascist. Seems like a day or do anything to benefit from power type deal, which I somehow find worse than true belief.
