MI6 literally went publicly crying to the government about this not long ago - Chinese influence taking over UK universities etc etc. Turned out the Chinese government actually funds research for something other than marketing degrees and supply side finance while universities find it useful to hire academics whose main publications aren’t rants on Twitter about the danger of anti-colonial themes in new Doctor Who.
China is doing actual scientific research, here’s why that’s bad.
(I had a conversation last week with someone who, no shit when confronted that China was doing more against climate change than the US was “But they’re just doing that to increase their standard of living, not reduce emissions” and upon pressing it became clear that their preferred response to climate change was “I do minor things like recycle, everyone in other countries dies or is kept in horrific eco-poverty”
And not as an unconscious view, they genuinely thought it was the centre left, morally compassionate position for them to remain rich and comfortable and everyone else to suffer to stop climate change.
