Hmm, not sure “country fans don’t care that an artist used the n-word” is the heartwarming underdog story this article thinks it is.

Morgan Wallen

Controversies

On February 2, 2021, TMZ released a video recorded on January 31 showing Wallen using the [n-word] with friends as they were entering his Nashville home. He issued a statement apologizing for using the racial slur.

[…]

In April 2021, following the surge in album sales, Wallen donated $300,000 to the Black Music Action Coalition in the names of 20 people who had counseled him following the incident.

[…]

On July 23, 2021, Wallen publicly spoke of his comments on Good Morning America, where he said that “he was around some of his friends, and they say dumb stuff together” and said that “he was wrong” to express those words. […] Wallen was nominated for Favorite Male Country Artist and Favorite Country Album for the 2021 American Music Awards, but was not invited to attend the ceremony, and was consequently unable to accept any awards if he won, which he did not.

[…]

Wallen performed with Ernest at the Grand Ole Opry in January 2022 to perform the latter’s single “Flower Shops.” This performance was immediately met with criticism by some fans and other musicians, especially as it came only six months after the Grand Ole Opry’s Twitter account made a statement against racism at the institution.

You can tell cancel culture is bullshit because being “cancelled” usually INCREASES one’s popularity.

There is a cancel culture, but it’s conservative. Bill Nye got “cancelled”, Greta Thurnberg got “cancelled”, KiwiFarms was a whole website dedicated to “cancelling” people for being different or holding unpopular political views. Hell, cancel culture is so conservative that a mere accusation of someone being a non-conservative can actually ruin their career.

The thing is, it does work - but only on people small enough. Once you reach a certain size, JK Rowling comes to mind, it won’t work on you any more. But it works wonders on crushing non-famous university professors and below. Remember that racist who thought he couldn’t buy groceries at a bodega? Bam, fired. And his real name out there for every potential employer’s HR to see during background check.

lmao, i knew exactly which ep this was. it’s hard to have a favorite episode of that show because almost every one is my favorite, but that one might be my actual favorite because of the part you call back here and the infuriating and heartbreakingly accurate nigerian food arc with darius. that show is so fucking incredible.

yeah, i get what you mean. i used to live in different parts of georgia and traveled within it a lot. i really got a kick of how rooted in place the show felt and how well it captured the details. i don’t even know how to talk about the show to friends. it makes me angry, sad, and laugh… often all at the same moment.
