Hmm, not sure “country fans don’t care that an artist used the n-word” is the heartwarming underdog story this article thinks it is.

Morgan Wallen

Controversies

On February 2, 2021, TMZ released a video recorded on January 31 showing Wallen using the [n-word] with friends as they were entering his Nashville home. He issued a statement apologizing for using the racial slur.

[…]

In April 2021, following the surge in album sales, Wallen donated $300,000 to the Black Music Action Coalition in the names of 20 people who had counseled him following the incident.

[…]

On July 23, 2021, Wallen publicly spoke of his comments on Good Morning America, where he said that “he was around some of his friends, and they say dumb stuff together” and said that “he was wrong” to express those words. […] Wallen was nominated for Favorite Male Country Artist and Favorite Country Album for the 2021 American Music Awards, but was not invited to attend the ceremony, and was consequently unable to accept any awards if he won, which he did not.

[…]

Wallen performed with Ernest at the Grand Ole Opry in January 2022 to perform the latter’s single “Flower Shops.” This performance was immediately met with criticism by some fans and other musicians, especially as it came only six months after the Grand Ole Opry’s Twitter account made a statement against racism at the institution.

You can tell cancel culture is bullshit because being “cancelled” usually INCREASES one’s popularity.

There is a cancel culture, but it’s conservative. Bill Nye got “cancelled”, Greta Thurnberg got “cancelled”, KiwiFarms was a whole website dedicated to “cancelling” people for being different or holding unpopular political views. Hell, cancel culture is so conservative that a mere accusation of someone being a non-conservative can actually ruin their career.

The thing is, it does work - but only on people small enough. Once you reach a certain size, JK Rowling comes to mind, it won’t work on you any more. But it works wonders on crushing non-famous university professors and below. Remember that racist who thought he couldn’t buy groceries at a bodega? Bam, fired. And his real name out there for every potential employer’s HR to see during background check.

Cancel culture is not real :matt-jokerfied:

God damnit why do liberals just accept every chud invention as gospel? I swear to god in two years WaPo will be writing something like “was Biden’s stolen election in 2020 justified to defeat Trump?”

Country music (at least the kind that comes on the radio, I’ve been assured there’s better stuff out there) is substance-free schlock for people who are so dumb and one-dimensional they make cartoon characters look complicated. It should be considered a human rights violation that I’m forced to listen to it at work.

Every country song on the radio, without fail, is a white guy with two mansions praising the lifestyle of white suburbanites in smaller mansions who get pissed off if they’re seated near black people at Applebee’s.

The only three topics for modern country songs are expensive trucks, alcoholism, and always making sure you never have thoughts in your head critical of white America.

It also plays on the radio at my job and I’m losing my mind.

I too have had to endure white identity music while working. Its one of the worst things I’ve had to do. :fidel-salute: braver than the troops comrade

Modern radio country is just the right wing of the pop music industry.

The genre itself has radical routes and plenty of much smaller artists carrying on that tradition, in the same way pop hip hop and pop rock are mostly inane drivel while there’s good musicians who aren’t getting credited for the advancement of the art hidden from site

There’s some folk music that I adore, and I know there’s a lot of shared heritage there. Bluegrass is pretty great, too.

Bluegrass is as lily-white as a KKK rally.

At work it’s literally the only station that comes in, and company policy states that we must have the radio on

Yeah. The only two other channels are a right wing local radio and the christian gospel station. We also need aux cord to hook up to the reviver, last dude who brought one in had it stolen so nobody wants to

It’s criminal to force people to listen to modern country music while they work. Its just white identity music, that also sucks on top of that

lmao, i knew exactly which ep this was. it’s hard to have a favorite episode of that show because almost every one is my favorite, but that one might be my actual favorite because of the part you call back here and the infuriating and heartbreakingly accurate nigerian food arc with darius. that show is so fucking incredible.

yeah, i get what you mean. i used to live in different parts of georgia and traveled within it a lot. i really got a kick of how rooted in place the show felt and how well it captured the details. i don’t even know how to talk about the show to friends. it makes me angry, sad, and laugh… often all at the same moment.
