If there’s any series/franchise ripe for a true comeback: It’s The Terminator.
It’s pretty widely agreed that every movie after 2, which is over 30 years old now, kinda sucks to varying degrees (Tho 3 might have it’s moments).
They’ve tried to soft-reboot it not just once, but twice, both being pretty abysmal failures.
In the right hands, I think it’s very possible for there to be another critically-acclaimed and successful Terminator movie, I don’t think it’s impossible.
People in this thread are thinking of this from a logical, writer’s position. The people who make these decisions are just looking at if Prey made a decent profit for the investment, if it did then Terminator WILL do this.
A big problem the franchise has aside from all the time travel and repetitious elements, is the the fact that it underwent a genre change after the first movie.
The first film is Sci-Fi horror, every film after it is Sci-Fi action. The original movie is disturbing and frightening at times. All subsequent movies afterward basically had a lighter tone in favor of more action scenes. T2 has it’s moments but what I really think captivated audiences from the beginning is how scary of concept it was, being hunted by a ruthless robot simply for living your life and minding your own business.
T2 is one of the best sequels ever, and it smartly built itself on the first movie’s strengths. All the other films have been varying levels of trash because they are not building on ideas, they are repeating them (I would commend Salvation on trying to just be the linear step in the storyline, but I only ever saw it once and don’t remember it being any good.). The Terminator franchise can’t seem to get itself out of the gutter of going after different iterations of the same characters in the same concept.
It needs to re-build itself on a different story arc. Forget the John Connor arc. If they still want to keep the same premise, do some story about how Skynet determines that Miles Dyson didn’t make a good enough Skynet so it tries to remove him from the picture that allows a more perfect Skynet to exist but occur at a later time where all the missteps taken could be avoided.
Sarah Connor Chronicles reboot when?
Dark Fate wasn’t that bad. I at least liked the part where the terminator killed scores of border patrol agents, that was pretty based.
dark fate would’ve been amazing 15 years earlier when its hamfisted hollywood feminism would’ve been ahead of the curve rather than behind it.
Hear me out: Alien vs Predator vs Terminator
