Thomas Paine was among the better liberals. He wasn’t a demon who cared exclusively about private property, like John Locke.
they are only “communists” on this one issue. it won’t extend much further.

The ancient Romans had it figured out - you can take away everything from people as long as you don’t touch their bread and circuses.
In ancient Rome, they’d tax you based on your assessment of the value of your household - OR they’d buy your estate from you at the price you told them it was worth~
