Have you had fun playing backups of games you legally own on physical media lately? Dumped any BIOS files from the old consoles you own?

I’m sure you have- after all, we’re all about doing things legally and being above board here, aren’t we?

spoiler

In all honesty, I get why the official forums, subreddits, discords and what have you for different emulator projects have the anti-piracy stances they do- they don’t want years of work being cease and desisted by Sony or Nintendo because of people linking to roms. I still think the pretense is funny

It’s pretty sad that it’s fairly common knowledge within the gaming world that anything older than 15 years old is worthless and/or abandoned. Yet we all have to pretend that we need to protect the IP holders and only those who own the holy grails of “physical copies” are allowed to make backups of their anointed artifacts for personal consumption.

One neat trick to stop a game from becoming public domain is to keep reselling it in digital format on stupid e-stores or mini consoles which are expensive raspberry pi’s

The trick is to just get a raspberry pi and shove a terabyte of retroarch shit in there

Get with the times, grandpa! These days it’s all about subscription services and cloud gaming (that can be turned off at a whim)! It’s sooooo convenient :so-true:

unless it’s a pokemon game, then you can still pay $29.99 for the used GBA cartridge

My favorite one is a speedrunner who gives out an “Amazon store link” to a copy of their speed game, which in actuality is just a google drive with a free download of it. They just have to be euphemistic or else Twitch could come down on them.

Some of them are really fucking annoying about it though. Someone closed a ticket on the rpcs github because the log files indicated it might’ve been a pirated copy :matt-jokerfied:

I see this a lot in PCSX2 forum posts when trying to find solutions to PS2 emulation issues :owl-pissed:

It’s so fucking easy to pay lip service to the anti-piracy thing and then just pretend you don’t see that the release group’s name is in the log files. These fucking nerds.

I owned and personally backed up every game from every console released up until the year 2000, however I accidently and lost all of them.

Good thing I backed them up!

I don’t even buy games anymore unless it’s gonna get a lot of multiplayer time with friends. Everything else is unashamedly stolen lmao, nintendo can drink from my ass

It’s hilarious how there are active Switch emulators and people playing leaked entire games before they are officially released

I played the entirety of Pokemon Scarlet 8 days before the commercial release.

I played Monster Hunter Rise 4 days before it’s commercial switch release.

I played those games, online through the Ryujinx LDN build, sometimes a week before they came out. The switch emulation scene is amazing.

Emulator developers are incredibly talented people.

Honestly even as someone who’s really enjoying Scarlet/Violet if you’re playing it on an emulator odds are you’re getting the better gameplay experience lmao

it even has working multiplayer…
