Well most people aren’t even aware it’s a slur. Using it derogatorily or just as the word for Romani people, like how the word black isn’t a slur but someone complaining about “blacks” is racist. Doesn’t make it not racist though
I always thought that slur was a stand-in for “psychic” because it was used in Runescape to refer to a (albeit completely friendly and even helpful) Romani-coded character.
When Jagex took out that part of her name, now just being “Aris”, I remember the internet going APESHIT.
This past weekend, I went to Lollapalooza in Chicago. I wore my new shirt, which in big letters, states “Sarah Palin is A C—.” I knew in this extremely liberal city, the hometown of Barack Obama, that I would not get lynched, but I wasn’t expecting so many compliments. Literally over 100 people complimented me on my shirt, from “I love your shirt” to “I love your shirt.”
I’m going to guess that instead of talking about the actual problems nomadic people face while interacting or wanting to integrate with general society, Reddit just used it as an excuse to be racist
