I was going to say… Joel wasn’t hispanic? How could anyone tell?

I thought people were going to be more pissed over Tess not looking like a stacked 10/10 smokeshow covered in a bit of grease paint.

Checking wikipedia:

Hispanic and Latino Texans are residents of the state of Texas who are of Hispanic or Latino ancestry. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, Hispanics and Latinos of any race were 39.3% of the state’s population.[1]

Even without the contractor part, a large proportion of texans are hispanic or latino lol. Almost like the state was Mexican territory until the 19th century and hard borders are a very modern invention.

I feel like those numbers are going to be difficult to determine because a lot of Hispanic people self-identity as simply white, that’s why the census has an option for “non-hispanic white.” Latin American countries/cultures don’t always have the ingrained one drop rule Anglo countries have.

I enjoy this show a lot because it’s not only fun but also just dunks relentlessly on chuds. The last episode was literally about how Christians are cannibals and child molesters, contrasting starkly with the wholesome communists from a few episodes back. I was a little hesitant to praise the show earlier on but I’m definitely a fan now.

I still maintain that the politics are bad because with the one exception of the utopian Jackson people are painted as too stupid, selfish, and vengeful to actually build something new out of the ashes and every revolution in the LOTU universe is a liberal caricature of revolution but otherwise it’s pretty entertaining.

Idk about that. The various factions are fighting over limited resources in the midst of a deadly pandemic and - what functionally amounts to - an endless guerrilla war against zombie-monsters.

We’re seeing instances of civilization persisting (eps 1, 2, 7) in a dystopian state, instances of civilization collapsing (eps 3, 4, 5, and 8), and instances of it thriving (6). But people aren’t portrayed as stupid or selfish so much as they’re portrayed as frightened and confused.

Whether its Fedra v Fireflies or the Christian Cannibals or the dynamic between Elle and Joel, there’s an underlying terror that runs through these relationships. People are terrified of the disease, they’re terrified of each other, they’re terrified of what happens when their supplies run out, and they’re terrified of dying for nothing.

Time and again, the decisions made by the characters is dictated by how they respond to their fears. And the drama is driven by conflict as characters diverge or collide in response to their fears.

Its easy to call individuals suffering from paranoia or depression or a deep-seated phobia as “stupid”. But so much of the show is intended to be empathetic towards these people - even the really horrible ones - by exposing and expounding on these fears.

I disagreed with the idea that everyone is painted as stupid but couldn’t articulate it. I appreciate this post

I think that the zombie genre is fundamentally reactionary, but as far as zombie movies or TV shows go, this one is good.

based on what, exactly? We don’t know Mary’s exact age, and she did consent as part of the story.

afaik the consensus among non-gymnasts is that she would’ve been underage by our standards and even if you think god is the moral one, there’s a pretty giant power imbalance between a 14-25 year old woman and god or the spirit (i have no interest in unitarian/trinitarian infighting, go meet emo phillips by a bridge if you want that)

The “where are all the zombies?! There’s so much more action in the game!” criticism is such a dumb take. In the game, Joel fights his way through literally hundreds of infected and humans both, without ever getting seriously injured outside of scripted encounters. There are at least three occasions when he outguns a literal army of human beings, killing them all single-handedly, without getting a scratch on him. If you translated that level of action into a live-action medium, it would look absolutely fucking absurd. The fact that they’re keeping combat rare and deadly–almost every major combat encounter we’ve seen has had at least one major character killed or injured–is much better.

It’s genuinely my biggest issue with the game and requires I suspend my disbelief because I understand they made a cover shooter game so there does have to be some cover shooting.

Everyone knows the best part of the Star Wars prequels is how everyone has a lightsaber and you have battles with like 500 lightsabers in them so they become just regular background shit
