Neither of them answered your question but Whoopi was a standup comic and successful actress in the 80s and 90s, most millennials probably know her from being in a few Nickelodeon movies as she tended towards “family friendly” fare as she got older. She’s been on The View since 2007 (!!) and still appears in movies. I haven’t watched any of them so no comment on quality but her stardom is definitely much dimmer than it once was, since she’s now in the “direct to streaming” tier of fame.

You answered “why does her name sound made up”, not “who the hell is whoopi goldberg”

If I remember correctly, she isn’t Jewish but took on the name Goldberg to sound more Jewish lol

She has stated that her stage forename (“Whoopi”) was taken from a whoopee cushion: “When you’re performing on stage, you never really have time to go into the bathroom and close the door. So if you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion.’ And that’s where the name came from.”

About her stage surname, she claimed in 2011, “My mother did not name me Whoopi, but Goldberg is my name—it’s part of my family, part of my heritage, just like being black,” and “I just know I am Jewish. I practice nothing. I don’t go to temple, but I do remember the holidays.”[17] She has stated that “people would say ‘Come on, are you Jewish?’ And I always say ‘Would you ask me that if I was white? I bet not.’”[17] One account suggests that her mother, Emma Johnson, thought the family’s original surname was “not Jewish enough” for her daughter to become a star.[17] Researcher Henry Louis Gates Jr. found that all of Goldberg’s traceable ancestors were black, that she had no known German or Jewish ancestry, and that none of her ancestors were named Goldberg.

She’s a talk show host mainly these days alongside with John McCain’s daughter

Trust me I hate that I know this but Megan left the show a couple seasons ago. Looking it up she’s been replaced by a different token conservative because you just have to have one.

I used to have like this weird autistic anger when people hadn’t heard of stuff that I felt like it was impossible to not heard of, but with situations like this I’m like “bless you, bless you for not knowing who this is, I love you”.

She changed her name to sound more Jewish and thus give her career a better shot in Hollywood. No, really.

No, she was horrible at that, too.

She shouldn’t have even been in it. But at the last minute, she came in demanding to have a part in the show. So they had to hastily write her in. And lo and behold, what part does she get? The wisest of the wise, who advises the Captain and is highly suggested to be a higher being with supernatural powers. cringe

Didn’t she literally attend university in the DDR?

Looking it up. It seems she just did a theater play or something with some other artists. She didn’t stay there for the entire 3 years the play ran either, coming and going to DDR. Also was a shitlib the entire time about how rebellious the actors/artists were to do it, fighting the state.

Are you conflating her living there briefly with Angela Davis who did her PHD in the DDR?

I think West Wing Thing conflated her and davis cause i only know Woopie went there from them. I know Davis got her degree there, but from reading Davis, etc not from Josh and Dave. Curse those boys
