Being born around the 90s/00s is cool because your parents lose their home and jobs as you grow up in 08, then the economy explodes and there’s a pandemic when you’re about to graduate college, and then you die from climate change. All because the most psychotic humans to ever live get a dopamine rush when they see number go up, pretty cool!

Not just 90’s. Mid 80’s kids got screwed over just as well with graduating into the recession of 08, tried to claw out with crippling debt, then got this shit as well.

All while being told that they should have a house and are “lazy for not having that” by 30.

Bonus points go to people who graduated college in the aftermath of the '08 recession, couldn’t land in a real career in their 20s, then decided to go back to grad school in time to graduate into the aftermath of an even bigger recession.

  1. Owning a house? Only if the market absolutely collapses and I’m lucky enough to have an economy proof job.

I remember graduating high school in the mid-00s. Interest rates were ridiculously high, like 4% for a savings account. Luckily, with the help of financial aid, I was able to avoid taking out student loans while in college. The ones that had to take out loans were not so lucky.

We might survive climate change, but it won’t be without sacrifice in my eyes, a lot of people will have to pay for their crimes; and an incalculable number of people will die before this happens. Possibly hundreds of millions.

But yea, that’s the mood. We have nothing left to lose, and a world to win.

Climate change may be “unavoidable” but literally every gram of GHG we prevent from being emitted makes the effects less severe. Never stop fighting comrades!

maybe we’ll finally hit the tipping point and people will actually do something to spark real change. or we’ll all die waiting for a means tested unemployment check that only covers half the groceries.

If we’re being technical, it’s only annualized GDP that’s down 33%. Annualized GDP is what the economy will look like if this quarter happens for the rest of the year. The US GDP has actually only contracted 11% this quarter! 🙃

This shit is gonna get worse for the next six months before it had even a chance of making itself better. Covid ain’t going nowhere until americans come together to fuck it up.

Only an anticipated $2.3T annual contraction, you say?

These are rookie numbers.

If I were you, I’d leave the US, because it’s going to get very, very bad. You don’t have to suffer through this if you don’t want it, since you’re not responsible for this shitshow. Whatever you decide to do, I wish you good luck; it’s going to be a wild ride for all of us.

What’s even amazing right now is due to out completely inept “strategy” of dealing with the Pandemic, you can’t even do this right now.

I think the southern border is open, you could probably sneak onto Canada and declare financial/pandemic refugee status.

It’s not always an option for people. Right now nobody is accepting Americans because of Covid, but for regular working class people it’s nearly impossible to emigrate unless you have some sort of familial connections abroad. I have no family abroad and my skills aren’t in high enough demand to justify accepting me as an immigrant for most countries. A shit ton more people who will be disproportionately affected will not have the choice to leave either.

I really sympathize with you.

But sorry, even though I would like to help any American migrant I could if the borders were open, my government does not take refugees from shithole countries.

I’ve thought about trying to join a couple of friends who are living and working in Japan, but I’ve lived abroad before and I really missed my friends and family back here. I think I’ve somewhat made my peace with suffering with my community over escape, but I have a feeling there are no good choices right now, unless you have WAY more money than I do.

I know on some level this is a win in a weird way for us (idk know how to articulate why. I mean I do, but its a lot lol) but let’s not forget that this coming recession is going to be BRUTAL for many people. Most likely myself included.

Wishing food luck to all my comrades. Good luck and stay strong. Solidarity

It’s gonna be brutal, but it’s also gonna be a good wake-up lesson for everyone (bar Boomers). I think Gen-X will get out with some scratches, but the younger generations will be absolutely destroyed (Millenials the most, Zoomers less so but still screwed, probably to the point where Mill’s are now).

It’s be a good shock to the system in regards to hanging all the politicians and their do-nothing bullshit.

permalink
report
parent

A lot of Gen-Xers will probably get fucked too. Old enough, with good enough careers, to have kids and mortgages and real obligations, but not old enough to actually run the company. And their paychecks are big enough to at least make that possible.

If you’re trying to heartlessly cut costs, you target exactly those people: management, but not upper management; bigger paychecks than a lot of younger folks; less desperate and less credentialed than people who’ve graduated in the last ~10 years.

I can see your point, but on the converse: They entered the job market in the 90’s with high-school and college. The previous recession “hurt” but didn’t put a strong-squeeze on them. For the most part, their management positions will keep them “safe,” in a sense. They’re the ones that train the people that bail because they aren’t getting paid enough, so they get to keep their jobs (for now).

It really depends on how this wave hits, though: If this wave hits harder than the last one, I could see the X’ers getting cut, but they generally have SOME savings to keep to where they can land on their feet and not on their backside if things go wrong. At least for a little while.
