Why does the PRC have a “rightful claim” to Hong Kong?
Did the Ming dynasty have a rightful claim to own the people and land of Hong Kong bestowed by the Mandate of Heaven which the PRC somehow inherited when they overthrew them?
Was the British Crown the rightful owners of the people and land of Hong Kong for 100 years and did they then have a right to sign that ownership to the PRC?
Or does the PRC have a right to govern all land in which the majority of people are ethnically Han or culturally self identify as “Chinese”?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the PRC being in Hong Kong is a bad thing, but the reason for that isn’t that the PRC somehow has a “rightful claim” to Hong Kong, it’s because it’s probably better for the people of Hong Kong and humanity as a whole than the alternatives.
Similarly, we don’t support the liberation struggle of the Palestinian people because we recognise that the League of Nations had the right to create the nation of Palestine as an Arabic homeland in the partition of the Ottoman Empire and we either don’t recognise the right of the League of Nations to re-partition Palestine to create an Israeli homeland or condemn the state of Israel for overreaching the boundaries the League of Nations set for them. We condemn the state of Israel for running a genocidal apartheid regime and support the Palestinian people in their struggle against apartheid.
Talking about nation states having a “right” to rule people who don’t want to be ruled by them is dangerous and nonsensical reactionary garbage.
