Pretty easy to be a communist when we predict all this shit, literally all the time lol

r/collapse is the most important subreddit to win the ideological battle in. If it goes far-right, it’s using the ultimate source of anxiety to drive eco-fascism. Other subreddits that form a pewdiepipeline will pale in comparison to how effective that one will be. It’s already a subreddit that has to feature a suicide hotline on the sidebar because it’s so overwhelmingly scary.

It absolutely is the largest materialist subreddit. I openly post as a Leninist with positive reception because the things we believe counter those anxieties in a constructive way. When you can point out the who/what/where/when/whys of a thread from a dialectical materialist standpoint, or even just share relevant theory doing so, it resonates there a lot better than it does in political subreddits or general ones. I see more potential for radicalisation there than anywhere else on the website and if nothing else it’s helping to refine your arguments for real-life organising.

I always agitate right wing nuts on there and often message their mods if a chud comes along. It’s important to me that that sub in particular stays on our side. It would be a shame to lose that one to chuds. I worry about the mod team sometimes though, but the users are mostly solid.

I think it’s at least as large as cth was right? They already are very disenchanted with capitalism and liberalism. They’re more left than regular reddit but they could break hard right in a second. Eugenics, pop control and just misanthropy are very much in play for /r/collapse’ future.

Larger than chapo by a stretch. We were at like 100-120k or so when I last checked and they’re at nearly 240k. Threads get like 2-3x the engagement of what I remember chapo threads getting.

It’s probably more active now than 4chan’s /b/ was when it radicalised a generation of fascists. Definitely more active than r/tumblrinaction or r/subredditdrama when they were prominent pipeline subreddits. Dozens or hundreds of times more active than any of the facebook groups driving fascism and as of today they have 4750x the subscribers r/CBTS did when I first saw what Qanon was going to become and reported the subreddit. Posting is mostly empty conversation but in a space like that it can become a permanent Nuremburg Rally reaching hundreds of thousands of people from their most vulnerable angle.

My favorite thing as a PhD in atmospheric physics is reading comments in whatever climate subs disparging the pessimistic tone of /collapse.

Motherfucker if youre not pessimistic youre delusional.

So… you’re the resident expert. What’s 2050 going to look like assuming nothing changes?

I shouldnt overstate, I study atmospheric chemistry not climate modeling. But according to the IPCC a business as usual approach (RCP8.5) would put us past 2°C already by 2050 (and towards several degrees by the end of the century).

Hey I checked back and yeah, you dont need to lie awake nights worrying about the permafrost methane changing the atmosphere overnight.

I don’t know as much about the clathrate gun as I should but last I read about it, the finding was the effects had been overestimated. I’ll check and get back to you. In any case the breathability of the air isn’t really the problem. Methane is just 30x worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas.

Whatever you do, do not look at any of the threads about the Three Gorges Dam

It’s a pretty big reminder that you’re still on reddit

Every June/July there is a flurry of new articles in the mainstream about how it is going to collapse and tens of millions will drown and how it is “different” to the last time. Evidence usually being things like blurry pictures where there is some deformation in the dam. I’m a layman but I am pretty sure this is working as intended

The comments were usually about how bloodthirsty and callous the CCP is. But I’ve just done a search to try and find examples and I see that the discourse is much better now 🥳

Seriously though it was BAD

I don’t know what reddit thinks about it and I don’t care. That said, dams fucking suck and completely fuck up the ecology of the area. Just build more nuclear if you need power.

Dams fucking rule, and while nuclear rules too you can’t just ignore the ecological impact of uranium mining like that. Ideally both would feature heavily in a sustainable energy infrastructure.

Dams definitely don’t fucking rule, they’re one of the most invasive ways of producing power conceivable…

That sub is great. They are a lot more realistic about things than anywhere else. The only issue is the occasional libs who scream at you to vote for Biden or the right wingers on there who have a hard-on for Bitcoin. Other than that, I’ve met some really great Marxists on there.
