Some other moron chimes in to defend them, and I bring up as an example Cyprus and Armenia which have a similar divide, and I’m like, do you think they’re also murdering their female children because of a one child policy? AND MOTHERFUCKER IS LIKE “Well, judging from the stats, I’m guessing yes”. Like, Cyprus is in many regards extremely similar to Greece, practically the same country in some regards, and there are lots of Cypriots as well as Armenians here. It’s so fucking weird to see some idiot have such a braindead and offensive take about something so close to you. I can only imagine how it is for the people who actually live in “evil” countries the “west” actually hates.

Yeah it was a selective abortion thing, not an infanticide thing. It’s for this reason that you’re not allowed to know your baby’s gender in China on ultrasounds and so on until the moment they are born. I think things have balanced out more in the last two decades, ie the zoomers just coming of age.
Gender dynamics in China are complicated, since the gender equality of everyday social interactions are belied by the slow process of transforming larger structural inequalities. That said, I can imagine the continuing need for these policies in very rural areas, but not really anywhere else.
Confucian misogyny is a hell of a drug, and it’s an East Asian thing more than a China thing: compared to contemporary China it’s absolutely even worse today in South Korea and Japan. I’m pretty neutral on the CCP in general, but from my point of view the gains that China has over those countries in terms of gender equality are undeniably a direct result of the cultural revolution.
