He’ll ban cars and single use plastic, reduce air travel by 90%, defund the military and police, everyone reduces meat consumption 90%, start a degrowth economy with a 24 hour work week, spend trillions to prepare us for the damage that is permanent, and open the borders to the millions of climate change refuges.

j/k we’re funked

edit: don’t forget there are 10 presidential terms between now and 2060 and Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House

Absent all the global benefits, this is an unbelievably amazing slate of policies. Literally all you have to do to stop global warming is make people’s lives better in a way that’s not profitable to corporations. Which is why we’re all probably fucked.

Even the optimistic 2 degree rise is fucking disastrous. We’re talking at best the erasure of coast lines, barren deserts where food is grown in the Midwest, acidification of the ocean and depleted fish stock, mass climate refugee migration, even wilder storm patterns and unpredictable weather, wars over water and arable land. Shit looks bleak even if we addressed this 10 years ago.

Look how badly the US fucked up with the response to this pandemic. It’s going to be so much worse when they try to address the problems that arise from climate change.

Best case scenario really is a “mild apocalypse.”

Those optimistic predictions are also the very conservative estimates as most reports take the “we don’t want to over-exagerate” approach.

Please be aware that the “current policies” projection here is outdated / highly optimistic. Recent, more precise climate models (CMIP6 - which will be included in the next IPCC report) show that we underestimated the effect of CO2e gases on radiative forcing. For example, CMIP5 models originally predicted around 2.7C for RCP 4.5 - which I’m guessing is the source of their projection here - where CMIP6 models suggests closer to 3.2C.

Also a reminder that basically the only time CO2 emissions have stopped growing year after year have been during economic crises, not as the result of willful human intervention, suggesting negative economic growth (degrowth - basically a pipe dream under capitalism) is truly the only path forward.

degrowth - basically a pipe dream under capitalism

on the citations needed episode about gdp fetishism they had a guest on who explained exactly how easily that could be done actually. like completely sans social revolution reforms to the workweek and reprioritization of industry sectors would do the trick. it’s fucking insane that big brains have figured out ways the bougeoise could stay in power and not kill us all but even that mild sacrifice is too much for them

I know there was a criticized paper that basically predicted the apocalypse for anything within the tropics when you account for loss of cloud cover due to CO2. Has there been any follow up models account for cloud cover loss? I’m curious just how much warming that effect is expected to add.

If it’s the paper I’m thinking about, IIRC it suggested a mechanism strongly decreasing the amount of cloud cover starting at 5C - which may be true (it was a single paper though), but at 5C it’s already the apocalypse anyway - 4C alone is completely incompatible with modern civilization; growing food becomes a real challenge almost everywhere at these levels. Personally I think given geopolitical instability resulting from the loss of resources, global conflicts probably happen long before 4C too.

The new models I’m talking about have adjusted lots of stuff and are more definite, though one of the main thing is also about clouds, and specifically the ice/water ratio in clouds. More info here for example.
