I’m like just coming up on ableist language & trying to rebuild my daily word choices to not include it - and holy fuck do alot of us do a terrible job.
Can someone whip up an ableist language bot that just points it out when we do a boo-boo?
No scolding, no shaming, - just a bot that points it out with a simple reply. Hell, “hey my ableism detector is going off” and have it rotate through with some loving positive messages.
I think alot of us would be surprised at how much we could grow in this department
BEEP BOOP COMRADE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THIS WEBSITE.
MY ANALYSIS INDICATES THAT THIS CONTENT MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLES THAT OF /r/stupidpol.
PLEASE ADJUST YOUR CHOICE OF LANGUAGE IN LINE WITH THIS GUIDANCE.
Yeah I kind of don’t like the idea of associating it with stupidpol though, like my goal is to be as absolutely inoffensive as possible - saying “your content belongs @ stupidpol” although correct, seems liable to make folks defensive or provoke that sort of mental defense mode.
I’d really love for it to be an entirely positive message - strictly pointing it out and ideally just saying something kind & loving. I swear that provokes better response in people. It’s so much better to just avoid the defense response entirely IMO
It’s an issue everywhere, hardly know anyone who doesn’t use ableist language on the regular.
Stupid, dumb, crazy, nutty, lame, blind, nuts, removed, removed.
Seems to me like dumb & stupid are the most commonly used
Edit: lol I see the last two got removed, so that’s cool. Shit we could leverage whatever just did that instead - just have them nixed right off the bat
Is it really such a big deal if someone uses stupid and dumb? I don’t even think these are really ableist words, no one really uses them against disabled people here or irl, everyone just uses them to say “this idea is dumb” or “you made a mess you stupid idiot”. Same with most of the other words you mentioned. I’ve never even seen anyone use “lame” in the “crippled” sense because it’s such an outdated way to the term. It just means “boring” or “pathetic”. As opposed to something like r****d which is genuinely a slur.
Idk, dumb has been used clinically to refer to people with speech related disabilities from inherited deafness - so everyone now using it to imply lack of intelligence… not great for our deaf comrades
It’s discriminatory - saying dumb or stupid is implying an inferiority to typical abilities. Stigmatizng marginalized folks
Idk, like I said I’m new to it - certainly not any kind of authority on the subject.
Thx for participating in the convo
Also you don’t have to be explicitly using them towards those folks, those folks are implied from the choice of words.
I’m dtf with this! I can’t help much in the code department, though. :P
this is a beautiful and wholesome idea
Alternatively: can someone point me to the resources to make my own bot for this purpose? I’d love to tackle it for our mutual benefit
Source code is in here - https://hexbear.net/post/52113
I think it would be good to also remind people of alternative adjectives for whatever word they’re using.
