Inspired by a recent thread. I’ve seen a bunch of people advocating for no shampoo lately, and I want to get to the bottom of this.
Anti-shampoo people, show yourselves, I want answers. Should we all stop doing shampoo? Is it a thing for everyone or only certain hair types? Is it superior to good shampoo + good conditioner? Do you need to do literally anything with it if you’re doing no shampoo or just let it go wild? This whole thing flies in the face of everything I think I know about hair and I want ANSWERS dammit 😤
I like how my hair looks better without shampoo (but I still wash my hair w/ con just like I would with shampoo) but I do sometimes have dandruff, usually when that happens I just use shampoo once and it goes away, but YMMV of course.
YMMV with no-poo, obviously, since everyone’s hair and scalp situation is different
I tried for months when quarantine started. Shampooing once a week with a tiny amount of sulfate-free shampoo. Didn’t work, no adjustment after weeks. My hair just kept being greasy and my dandruff turned into the stuff of nightmares. I’m happily back to shampooing once a day with head and shoulders.
Do what works for you.
I’ve spent the last year trying to get good at having curly hair. Going shampoo-free is very common in the natural hair community because sulphates are Haram and curly hair tends to lean dry, but you definitely don’t let your hair go wild lol.
“Cowashing” (washing your hair with a light/diluted conditioner) is a popular alternative for cleaning. (Followed by conditioning every time you wash.) I do that most of the time, but I’ve found I do still need to wash with a gentle, sulphate free shampoo every now and then or my hair gets all flat and sad. Though I don’t know if that’s a sign that I still need shampoo, or just that I use way too much leave-in cream and styling product 😅
I think it’s really dependent on your own hair and probably the only way to know if the no shampoo thing works for you is to give it an earnest go for a month or two and see what happens 🤷🏻
I used to use shampoo daily and I had pretty bad dandruff. I used all of the dandruff shampoos that are sold over the counter, and they only made it worse. I started using my partner’s fancy shampoo (who has long hair), the expensive sulfate-free kind, and it helped a lot, but not as much as not washing it with shampoo daily. My hair is currently shoulder length, and I only shampoo and condition every few weeks (if it feels especially bad or it absorbs strong smells, like campfire smoke). Just hot water is enough most of the time, although my job isn’t dirty and I don’t smoke anymore.
Don’t know if true but I heard if dealing with nuclear fallout it’s best not to use conditioner since it will trap it in your hair longer. I pray this information never becomes necessary but idk best to have it.
Anyway I find baby shampoo works best for my hair and as for conditioner I tend to first water it down in a separate bottle and dry my hair slightly then apply for a few minutes before rinsing out. Unless I have dirt or motor oil in my hair I tend not to use any regular shampoo since they too harsh seems to dry out my scalp. A lot of this trial and error with mom and sisters helping me figure it out. Also drinking a large amount of water helps and applying a bit of oil to scalp.
