This is a somewhat pro-China stance, as far as western policies on China go.
He’s in favour of a joint framework for reducing escalation, and preserving the status quo for another decade. The hawks, by contrast, want to push for containment, and in the worst cases, war, now, on the basis that China’s only going to get stronger as time goes on.
I think Beijing would be very happy to have Rudd on the other side of the negotiating table.
…War? With a nuclear state? Limited engagement, maybe. But I don’t think anyone would seriously propose war.
War doesn’t need to be bloodlust to the death. Limited engagement can occur without nukes. It just has a lot of risk of escalating to nukes.
Even with nukes, there’s no certainty that it’ll go full MAD. You can have limited engagement with tactical nukes.
Ideally for the hawks, they’d force China into making a stab for Taiwan, successfully repel it, demolish the SCS islands, and close the Strait of Malacca to starve China of oil. They’d hope that the double up of the failure of retaking Taiwan, and the economic pain from the blockade, would be enough to force some sort of regime change.
