They also heard me say something pretty embarrassing under my breath. What do I do, I won’t be able to look them in the eye ever again.
You’re gonna need to clean your room and accidentally turn your camera on again so they can see you attempting to be normal and will write it off as a fluke, otherwise you’ll be known as the messy hoarder (I’m assuming the room is a total disaster and you’re not just exaggerating about some laundry on the bed or whatever)
Turn it into a bit. Next time you turn on your camera, your room is completely empty. Then, the time after that, it’s full of men wearing suits and guy fawkes masks. Then it’s full of giant stuffed animals. Each time act embarrassed and quickly apologize before turning the camera back off.
At least you didn’t pull a Jeffrey toobin… i think you’ll be ok. Messy room? What did you say?
An absolutely terrible messy room. Also the thing I said was “oh no, i’m pretty sure they all hate me” under my breath.
Well play it off as a joke that your room was so fucked up and that was your reaction to them seeing it?
I obviously don’t know the dynamics of your work situation but I’ve been on calls with people who said MUCH more embarrassing shit, as well as stuff that was specifically disparaging to other people in the call, when they clearly thought they were muted and nothing happened. It’s obviously embarrassing for you and I understand why you feel that way of course, but in my opinion the most likely outcome is that nothing will happen.
No one will remember.
One time during a call I said, fairly loudly, “oh my God, these fucking people” when someone was getting away with the same stupid fuck up for like the 1000th time, and I wasn’t muted (headset mic was, but the laptop mic was not for some reason). No one really knew who it was in the moment since there were like 20 people on the call with no video, some people figured out it was me and busted my balls for it for a couple of days, but I never heard anything after that and management never said anything.
From that point on I have treated webex calls like gun safety, you are never muted even when you are.
