Marv, Merv. Today in Turkmenistan, Merv was once a splendid city of the Silk Road.
Fucking Mongols burned it down, allegedly killing the whole population & many refugees from their pillaging. A million people might’ve died.
You know why? The garrison defended themselves against some Mongol outriders. When the actual army arrived they did the ‘correct’ thing & surrendered, but Tolui decided to kill everyone anyway.
I would love to go to Turkmenistan. and Uzbekistan for that matter
and Tajikistan! and Kyrgyzstan! And Kazakhstan why not

i definitely subscribe to the Ala ad-din Muhammad school of fighting mongols–let them come to me in cities or river fords. unfortunately in real life many of Khwarzm’s cities surrendered without a fight: if places like Merv put up the struggle Urganj had they might’ve arrested Mongol momentum.
