Hello, we are back folks. I think this is the longest gap I’ve taken on this series.
I really liked Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R), it actually feels like the best 2d Metroid, lots of cool bosses, massively improves the originals design and some genuinely surprising moments. Its hard to find now but the subreddit tends to know where the most recent version is.
Iconoclasts is pretty good and Bloodstained
So this might seem like a strange choice because it’s a hentai game, but Midnight Castle Succubus is one of best Metroidvanias of all time. It’s based on Castlevania 2, with some gameplay ideas from later in the series, and some original ones. Controls nice, good enemy variety and a lot of bosses given its length, then there’s a second map and a second set of upgrades after you hit the halfway point. It’s one of a very small club of games that I enjoyed enough to 100%
If the hentai stuff bothers you, it has an SFW mode that changes all of the offending sprites and loading screens.
