Always fun to look at the people who deleted their comments in solidarity with her and it’s like staff writers at Current Affairs and one of your favorite podcast hosts. At least they had the good sense to delete, I guess.

Whats with people feeling bad that a person with a slave had to write about owning a slave. This is breaking my brain

the guy also largely admits guilt about not doing enough for her

I agree, I also don’t think he did enough when he was 18-30, but he was also emotionally abused by his parents, who cruelly made him complicit before he really had agency. Just a really horrible situation.

Ya, the Jia Tolentino stuff was way worse, like her parents were pretty clearly running a huge human trafficking ring, doing all the shit Saudi Arabia and the Emirates do to abuse guest workers. And not only does she whitewash what her parents did but has the gall to compare their eventual prosecution to police murdering black people with impunity.

And the cherry on top were all blue check New Yorker writers literally tweeting ‘Solidarity’ at her.

I read The Atlantic article and it was heartbreaking stuff in general.

Yeah I remember reading that and it was a really introspective piece that really made me think about difficult ethical questions. Because obviously what happened to her was messed up but he wasn’t the one at fault for that.

I remember reading it, he was some left lib in academia or something. The coward finally wrote the confession article then died lmao. His parents had Lola since she was young, and brought her to America, she was a slave in their household. Only when she was elderly did Alex Tizon (being well paid in Academia) finally offered her some material comfort. He should’ve at least tried to gain her freedom when he grew out of boyhood, the coward.
