I’m pretty noviceand will certainly offend someone with this statement but I thought KDE was Windows-like (task bar, start menu, etc) and Gnome was Mac-like (permanent menu bar across top, dock).

The screen shot seems to remind me of Gnome rather than KDE. What are the benefits of configuring KDE to look like Gnome?

We use Skinny. We got 6 months free on a 12 month contract a few years ago (still can’t believe how good of a deal that was), and haven’t found anything better since so are still with them even though it’s now up to $80 a month as of this month (for 300 down/100 up speed I think).

I’ve been trying to find a good deal though, so if anyone has suggestions then I’m keen to hear them. Especially if there’s a good sign on deal!

I like the discount, I think we need to encourage vehicles with lower emissions and NZ is a great place to do so since we have 80%+ of power from renewable sources (and if you charge overnight it’s higher).

I don’t think it’s justified getting all upset about a few comments, but if I saw an article about someone getting arrested for smashing a self-checkout machine then I’d assume the machine probably deserved it.

I’m honestly surprised with that graph. Over the last few years there has been a huge uptick in credit surcharges, I’ve started using EFTPOS a lot more because of it. Perhaps that’s represented in the flattening of the decline rather than the increase in EFTPOS use that I expected.

I’ve been using Beeper a month or two. They had a long waiting list, and initially it was subscription only, but they are working on smashing through the waiting list and have changed to a freemium model where you get it for free and (eventually) they will have extra features for subscribers.

Basically, it’s one chat app that connects to lots of different chat services.

If you’re technical, the app is a fork of Element, and the service uses matrix bridges to connect to different chat services, but it’s all presented in a (somewhat) polished way. The wait list is because they are still struggling with scaling and quirks but if you’re on Lemmy you’re probably already well familiar with putting up with this.

It covers heaps of chat networks. Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, Telegram, and more. It also will let you SMS (unlike Signal 😬).

You can also connect to Matrix rooms but you don’t seem to be able to connect to an existing Matrix account (it uses a Beeper matrix account to connect).

It doesn’t do video/audio calls so they recommend you leave the original app installed and disable message notifications (but leave on call notifications) if you use this.

Joplin has multiple sync options. Other than Nextcloud, you can use OneDrive, Dropbox, and they have a subscription service as well.

Obsidian is another to look at, but you need to either pay for sync or bring your own sync (though I don’t know that you can sync to mobile without using their sync edit: see below comment by @fossisfun@lemmy.ml that explains how to do it).

I think it’s probably helpful to know if sync across platforms is important to you, and if so, whether you’re willing to pay for it. I’m not sure that there are really many alternatives to an app provided for free with free syncing - that costs money to provide and honestly I’d be a bit dubious about using a service like that.

It’s not necessary targeted like that. Remember Chrome sends a lot of information about the user, allowing them to more easily gauge if it’s a bot. Firefox hides a lot of information, blocks a lot of third party scripts by default, and even sends fake information for some things. For all intents and purposes, Firefox looks much more like a bot than Chrome.

With that said, I use Firefox exclusively and don’t have anywhere near as many issues as you seem to.
