The impact of modernism and colonialism on our ability to discuss and judge magic can get pretty complicated. A lot of branches of science will define magic as something like “belief or action which lacks evidence in its justification”. Which is basically just saying, “if we haven’t done enough science to it yet, anyone believing XYZ is engaging in magical thinking”. Meanwhile, that same scientific academy will turn around and enable the creation of the field of modern marketing, which is entirely based on a sympathetic magic.

Hell, money itself is one of the most powerful magical constructs in the history of humanity. It literally gains its power from belief. That’s chaos magick, straight up.

This makes me understand the need for China’s 0 Covid policy. I already understood, but I thought it was more like a large number of people being inconvenienced to save a number of people which is proportionately small but absolutely large from death. For whatever reason I’d heard about how awful it is for everyone else and even experienced long Covid symptoms and it just never clicked.

Yeah there’s no real comparison between this and the author’s reply within the plot of Fault In Our Stars. Vonnegut gives good advice here. I obsessively saved everything I ever wrote for years. I found that destroying or forgetting the stuff I made made me focus on creating for the right reasons and allowed me to honed my taste once I started missing a piece or two and wishing I hadn’t deleted them. The vast majority of ideas, the initial gush of output that could eventually be formed into a Good Thing, are nothing exceptional. And that’s okay

Same. I made the mistake so many times of trusting that an edgy creator had something more substantial under the surface. For Natalie, I was wrong. For everyone proceeding her, I was right, just not in the way I was hoping
