Conscientiousness - plan the life you’d like to have. You get to have what you want and what would be good for you. What would that be? You need direction. It is direction that produces primary positive emotion. If you need positive emotion to get through life (which you do, because you can’t even move without positive emotion, positive emotion is a good bulwark against terror and pain) if you need those things you need direction, you need a goal, you need a value structure.

Disagreeable men won’t do anything they don’t want to do. They just say, “up yours. I’ll go home and play video games,” and “why should I work for you? I’ll just go have fun. I’ll do my own thing.” If you take the men who are like that and say, “What do you want? You can have what you want, but you have to figure out what it is.” So they write down what they want and they think, “Oh, hey, that might be worth having, so maybe I’ll put some effort into it.” Responsibility. That’s what gives life meaning. Lift a load. Then you can tolerate yourself.

You can always tell people who don’t watch the History Channel - they think it still does history shows.

Something that oppressed minorities tend to have that straight white guys don’t is a sense of community and solidarity. We have “our people”, basically, and at least to an extent that can give a sense of belonging.

Yeah they do. It’s called racism.

Of course it didn’t happen like in that dumb movie. But the Soviets really did use human wave attacks. They were frontal infantry attacks without support. The Japanese did the same thing with their Banzai charges. Human wave attacks work sometimes, something that never gets mentioned. Heck, even the US army used a version of this primitive tactic enabled by their semi-auto rifles, “marching fire”.

Putting NKVD blocking regiments to shoot retreating soldiers doesn’t strike me as being conservative with men’s lives. Retreat is an integral part of combat. When you get put in a bad position, you withdraw and try again somewhere else. It’s like continuing a chess game when you’re down a Queen. Just call it a day and try again from a fresh position.

Soviet soldiers very often displayed remarkable courage and resilience—but were all too often treated as cannon fodder by their generals. In the end they got to Berlin but 23 million died.

“If we come to a minefield, our infantry attacks exactly as it were not there.”

– Marshal Zhukov, 1945

All you have to say is Gates Foundation and people freak out. It’s a contaminated word. Good luck getting anyone to listen to any argument you make.

Best karaoke song ever. Wait until everyone is good and drunk before pulling it out. Oh yeah.

The commanders were pretty wasteful of their men. Human wave attacks?

Unfortunately our society has nothing to say to a lot of young men. We despise them and want them to go through life lost. This man identified a void and jumped into it. We should have had something for these lost young men, but we just chuckled that they were lost.
