Am I missing anything that makes this a horrible or unacceptably risky idea?
Yes, I am not 100℅ sure, but I think debt collectors. My little understanding is that the bank may not want to go through the hassle of sorting this out themselves if the debt is small and the applicable laws complex, in which case they can sell the debt to a debt collector. Whatever person or agency is motivated enough to buy that debt might have some good experience in getting paid back. They can annoy your family for a while, and they might know of some laws that they can use to put pressure.
And there’s the program to give certain power users the option of buying stock before it debuts on the public market.
I am curious about seeing how this plays out. Let’s say multiple users, who are inexperienced in investing, decide to buy-in… And then the stock price plummets shortly after IPO. I know very little about law and so I am only speculating here. I suspect that the users might have a legal case against Reddit on the basis that they were sold a risky asset under conditions generally reserved to experienced investors. The inexperienced users could not have been expected to fully understand the risk. Even if the users are given the S-1 form and asked to sign a legal document stating that they understand the risks, I don’t think that this would be enough for Reddit to not be liable.
Thank you!!! Very happy about the moderation tools!
There is a problem opening community pages. I checked and the bug was introduced with this version.
Thanks!! I faced an unexpected problem, but now the files are being transferred _
The transfer is quite slow. I have timed it for a bit and if the “Used Space” data on the object storage dashboard is correct, files are being transferred at about 120 MB / minute… If that rate is the average, this will take about 40 hours :/ But hopefully the object storage dashboard is lagging. We will see.

Yes, sorry!
I often check the available disk space and expand it when it reaches ~90% occupancy. I increased it by 20 GB last Sunday night before traveling for work and did not expect it to fill up so quickly, but I underestimated the current rate at which the disk is being filled. This morning the disk was filled but I did not notice until after work.
I will keep a larger empty buffer to avoid this happening, but I also want to find some way to save disk space. The overwhelming majority of the space is occupied by images that are duplicated from other instances.
I have a similar one and I also did not find it to be useful.
This week I received a few capacitive soil sensors. I plan to hook up this and other sensors to a few ESP32s with WiFi and see if I can make a simple site with temperature and soil humidity charts for some of my plants.
For pH I just use pH strips for doing simple routine checks. For soil I’ll add some soil to reverse-osmosis water, wait for the soil to settle at the bottom, and then stick the paper in. Not perfect but I just want to check that it doesn’t jump too far either way.
Possibly if/when China uses weapons against Taiwan or some other country in Asia according to Theodore Ts’o in that thread (here)
There are multiple sanctions programs, and at least in the US, for the sanctions program which Huawei is in, there is an exception for conversations and patches that take place in a public mailing list, such as LKML. As a result, as the ext4 maintainer, I am comfortable taking patches from engineers employed by Huawei, and I consider them valued members of the ext4 development community.
However, note that China is not actively attacking Taiwai militarily, while there are Russian missiles and drones, some of which may controlled by embedded Linux systems, that are being used against Ukraine even as we speak. Hence, it should not be surprising that the rules imposed by the US Government might be different for Huawei compared to other sanctioned entities that are directly or indirectly controlled by the Russian Military-Industrial complex.
There are also other sanctions regimes imposed by Japan, European Countries, etc., which might be more or less strict. So in general, if you are not sure what you need to do as an US, European, Japanese, etc. citizen who might be subject to civil or criminal penalties ---- talk to a lawyer.
The bottom line is that it is a false equivalence to claim that sanctions involving China and Russia are the same. They very much aren’t; one country is engaging in an active shooting war (or if you prefer, “special military operation”), and the other is not.
Of course, if China were to militarily attack Taiwan or some other country in Asia, circumstances might change at some point in the future. Hopefully Chinese leaders will pursue a path of wisdom and those consequences won’t come to pass. Ultimately, though, that’s not up to any of us on this mail thread.

First of all, congratulations for bringing a baby girl into this world!! You must be really excited! I am very happy for you!
This looks very cool. I set up a wiki (https://ibis.mander.xyz/) and I will make an effort to populate it with some Lemmy lore and interesting science/tech 😄 Hopefully I can set some time aside and help with a tiny bit of code too.
Expatriate/expat
Maybe it is not a popular opinion. And perhaps calling it “bigotry” is too far. But I work in a different country from where I was born, and I consider myself an immigrant. I have however seen this trend of referring to educated professionals as “expats” to distinguish us from people who immigrate to escape conflicts and/or poverty. I don’t agree that this distinction is necessary or valuable, and I feel uncomfortable when I am described with that term. If I am called that, I usually chuckle and let people know that I’m an immigrant!!
