WSJ - Social-Media Account Overseen by Former Navy Noncommissioned Officer Helped Spread Secrets

An American administrator of the Donbas Girl blogger network uses a pro-Russian persona across online platforms

A purported Russian blogger known as Donbass Devushka, which translates as Donbas Girl, reposted the files from obscure online chat rooms. The blog is the face of a network of pro-Kremlin social-media, podcasting, merchandise and fundraising accounts. But the person who hosted podcasts as Donbass Devushka and oversees these accounts is a Washington-state-based former U.S. enlisted aviation electronics technician whose real name is Sarah Bils.

Ms. Bils, 37 years old, served at the U.S. naval air station on Whidbey Island until late last year, even as the accounts she had established and supervised glorified the Russian military and the paramilitary Wagner Group. They are among the most widely followed English-language social-media outlets promoting Russia’s views.

Progressive political figures with an orientation more favorable to Washington are forming a new alliance of South American parties and are deliberately excluding the forces that are leading the continent’s liberation processes. Don DeBar interviewed Nicaraguan writer Stephen Sefton and Latin America correspondent Camila Escalante on KPFK Pacifica Radio. Below is a transcription of last week’s segment.

Don Debar:

This weekend, a conference named ‘Building the Future ‘will take place in Santiago, Chile, hosted by Chile’s president Gabriel Boric. It’s being billed as a new discussion forum for the left. However, like most things, there are contradictions. To probe some of those, we spoke with journalists Stephen Sefton in Nicaragua and Camila Escalante in Brazil via Skype on Wednesday.

Camila Escalante:

They’re in some of the initial stages of the formation of a so-called leftist bloc, a block of South American left wing parties which say they want to sort of be a new progressive face for the future that would actually stand in contrast with, and be an alternative to, the Sao Paulo forum. Sao Paulo forum being a group of parties that includes all the socialist parties of all of Latin America.

So this new block would exclude countries like Venezuela and Venezuela’s United Socialist Party (PSUV). And they say they want to talk about feminism and human rights in the climate. But we also know that these are the countries that these are some of the leaders, and where we’ve seen some of the most criticism of the so-called human rights situations in countries like Venezuela and Nicaragua.

It really seems that they’re trying to form something that deliberately excludes anti-imperialist parties. And it’s kind of a collection of parties that have had an orientation that’s more favorable and aligned with Washington.

Stephen Sefton:

Yeah, and from from the point of view of people here in Nicaragua and probably also in Venezuela, and we we see this kind of move as an attempt to divide popular movements, the revolutionary governments that are trying to work together towards integration, principally through organizations like the the CELAC, the community of Latin American and Caribbean states.

Although this is, as you say, it’s at the level of political parties, apparently. And obviously, the underlying idea is to put distance between themselves and the much more influential and much more solid record of the Sao Paolo forum, which has been going since, what, 1990, 1991, when it was originally set up. And it’s it’s as Camila said, it’s the it’s the forum for all the progressive radical revolutionary political parties in the region.

So for these essentially social democrat governments to start this initiative is very obviously a means of dividing what should be a united front against the imperialist interventions and influence and the different ways that the United States and its European allies seek to precisely to prevent Latin America from uniting and becoming a solid, integrated regional bloc.

Trudeau regime prepares to abduct children from illegal Syrian detention camps

More than two dozen women and children held in northeastern Syrian detention camps are due to arrive on Canadian soil any day, but the fate of 10 of those children is unknown after their mothers were given the “cruel” choice of giving them up or keeping them in “inhumane” conditions, according to advocates.

“Choice almost is not the right word If you’re asking a mother to say goodbye to her children,” says Faraz Bawa, a Calgary-based lawyer for one of the women.

In January, after years of efforts by lawyer Lawrence Greenspon, the federal government agreed to repatriate 19 Canadian women and children from northeastern Syria, where they have been held in Kurdish-run detention camps for suspected ISIS members and their families.

An additional 10 children born to four non-Canadian mothers were identified as being Canadian citizens who qualify to be repatriated, according to Alexandra Bain, director of FAVE (Families Against Violent Extremism).

The children were either born in Canada or were fathered by Canadian men. The mothers are their sole caretakers.

But on Jan. 27, the mothers were contacted by Global Affairs Canada officials who offered to repatriate only the children, according to a letter sent by FAVE to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“The mothers were asked to make a Solomonic decision: save your children but lose them forever — or condemn them with you to a life of hell,” reads part of the letter.

If the children are brought to Canada without their mothers, some are at risk of being placed in provincial care, Bain says.

The letter describes the conditions in the camps as “inhumane, where individuals are arbitrarily detained without trial, live in constant fear of violence, have inadequate access to medical care, and are at risk of severe disease.”

Bain says the families she works with are looking to denounce extremism.

“Most women returning have suffered some form of being trafficked, recruited and have themselves been abused,” says Bain.

Lawyer Yoav Niv, who helped coordinate representation for the four non-Canadian mothers, questions the legality of the womens’ placement in the camps and called their detention “arbitrary and unlawful.”

“Detention based solely on family ties amounts to collective punishment, a war crime,” he said.

Canada, one year into the Ukraine war: ‘It’s not time to talk about peace’

OTTAWA — Russia’s war has muted the pacifists in Canada’s left-leaning Liberal government.

“Right now, it’s not time to talk about peace, it is time to arm them,” Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says of Canada’s support for Ukraine. “I never thought as a progressive politician that I would be saying that.”

Canada’s foreign minister says China peace talks in Moscow will prolong Ukraine war

OTTAWA - Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says China’s attempts to broker peace in Ukraine will likely just help Russia re-arm and prolong the conflict.
